Blue Flight 01:50
Blue Flight . . . the blue flight had no landing, the worlds are out of balance, and because the airplane vanished, I, never arriving, now haunt the raw newspaper, and in words I hate. Do you read me? in the white noise tonight, unknown! in air, history, lost, down here with the legends, sea serpent, mermaid. . .
2.
Skywriting 04:01
Skywriting . . . oh, hallelujah motion, around the world. Backfire and fire, cross the equator, no Neptune to douse me, wrong turn, long ride, back track; and now, over the dateline, led on by the horizon, to yesterday, skywriting. . . Air speed, time, distance, the true heading: . . . The east is lightening, and with no rest, morning is close; this signal, this ghost transmission, will fade out. . . after this wave, last words, grace me, now and then, rolled in the mystery, with a moment of your love. . .
3.
Air Heart 03:19
Air Heart . . . are you saying my luck will run out. . . I jaywalk where my heart leans, and risk is music. It’s useless, like poetry, this gesture: I light out into the wilderness of air, and to validate a dream in a woman’s eye. . . . but I’m Air Heart. I let her down, don’t see the cutter, ah, only acres of water, the dazzle at the equator, did we drift north. . . I ain’t lost but I don’t know where I’m at. . . In the salty morning, I know what’s on the line, but la-de-da; in the come what may sun, I go on walking out to the lovely airplane.

You Belong to Me See the pyramids along the Nile Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle Just remember darlin all the while You belong to me See the marketplace in old Algiers Send me photographs and souvenirs Just remember when a dream appears You belong to me I'll be so alone without you Maybe you'll be lonesome too And blue Fly the ocean in a silver plane See the jungle when it's wet with rain Just remember till you're home again You belong to me

about

Larry Beckett, author of the lyrics of the modern classic ‘Song to the Siren’, written, with many other songs, with Tim Buckley, is a prolific and highly regarded American poet. Over the decades he has been composing an epic work called American Cycle, which features ten book-length poems based on pioneering heroes and charismatic places in America’s past. It would not be complete without the self-liberating pre-war pilot Amelia Earhart, and Larry published his eponymous poem based on her life in 2018.
Beckett has released two critically acclaimed albums (One More Mile 2015, Love & Trial 2018) with British songwriter Stuart Anthony, previously of The Long Lost Band, and when Stuart got a copy of Amelia Earhart, he felt inspired to try to capture the spirit of her, in music. Larry gave him a free hand to choose which passages to set; three songs were written, and a cover recorded as well. The title ‘Risk is Music’ comes from the poem itself. Stuart plays all the instruments. The EP was produced by Beckett and Anthony’s long-time friend and producer, Paul Walmsley.
The track listing is
1. Blue Flight – featuring sounds of the Lockheed 10 aircraft she flew, this arresting yet gentle 12-string and piano-driven song deals with her eventual disappearance.
2. Skywriting – deals with the transcendence of flying - set with gentle piano and close-up vocals.
3. Air Heart – an adventurous, multi-layered song which captures Amelia’s spirit of adventure as it takes off into its own sky.
4. You Belong to Me – a cover of the old 40’s and 50’s song, made famous by The Duprees. It features Larry Beckett on piano and was chosen for its reference to the ‘silver plane’ flying across the world. You can imagine it being sung by Amelia’s husband.
